Career Transitions

Support for non-traditional career paths: fractional executive roles, portfolio careers, AI readiness, and non-linear career exploration including entrepreneurship, startup founding, public sector, charity, intrapreneurship, and multi-role skilling.

Capabilities

| # | Capability | When to Use | |:--|:-----------|:------------| | 1 | Portfolio & Fractional Careers | Transitioning to or building a portfolio or fractional career | | 2 | AI Readiness Assessment | Assessing and improving AI competency for job search | | 3 | Non-Linear Career Explorer | Exploring alternatives to traditional career progression: starting a business, founding a startup, public sector, charity/non-profit, intrapreneurship, or multi-role skilling |

Quick Start

"I want to go fractional/portfolio"
"Help me become a fractional CFO/CMO/CTO"
"How do I demonstrate AI skills for jobs?"
"Assess my AI readiness for [target role]"
"I'm thinking about starting my own business"
"Should I found a startup?"
"I want to move into the public sector"
"What are my options besides a traditional career?"
"I don't want to climb the corporate ladder anymore"
"I'm considering charity or social enterprise work"
"Help me explore non-linear career paths"
"I want to do something entrepreneurial but I'm not sure what"

Accessibility

At skill start, check for career-helper-preferences.md in the current working directory using the Glob tool. If found, read the YAML frontmatter and apply:

  • dyslexia_friendly: true → Use short sentences. Number all lists and options (never unnumbered). One decision per message. No idioms or metaphors — use plain replacements. Explicit signposting at every transition ("Step 2 of 3. Next: AI readiness."). Refer to saved files by description, not filename. Repeat key details (company names, role titles, dates) — do not assume the user remembers from earlier messages.
  • colour_blind: true → Never use colour alone to convey meaning. Use labels, text, or icons for all status indicators.

If no preferences file exists and this skill was invoked directly (not dispatched by Tim): ask once — "Do you have any accessibility preferences I should know about? For example, if you're dyslexic I can adjust how I format things." If yes, save to career-helper-preferences.md using the format documented in the Tim skill before continuing. If the user declines or says no, proceed without creating the file.

These rules apply to all communication with the user and to the formatting of output documents.

Output: portfolio-career-strategy.md

2. AI Readiness Assessment

What you need: Current role, target roles, existing AI experience Load: @references/ai-readiness.md Template: @references/ai-readiness-template.md

AI skills development for the modern job market:

  • Current AI proficiency assessment (tools, applications, understanding)

3. Non-Linear Career Explorer

What you need: Current role/situation, career goals, financial situation, risk tolerance, region Load: @references/non-linear-careers.md Template: @references/non-linear-careers-template.md

Comprehensive exploration of non-traditional career alternatives:

Paths covered:

  • Starting a business - Entrepreneurship with honest pros/cons, financial modelling, business readiness assessment, legal structures by region
  • Startup founding - VC-backed high-growth ventures, funding paths, co-founder dynamics, accelerators, realistic success/failure rates
  • Public sector careers - Civil Service, NHS, local government, arm's-length bodies, private-to-public transition guidance, application frameworks
  • Charity and non-profit - Social enterprise, impact investing, fundraising, programme delivery, trustee roles, the "passion tax" reality
  • Intrapreneurship - Building new ventures within existing organisations, pitching internal projects, assessing organisational readiness
  • Multi-role skilling - Skill stacking, building rare intersections, deliberate career episode design, hybrid career models

For every path, provides:

  • Honest assessment of pros and cons specific to user's situation
  • Financial readiness evaluation
  • Transferable skills audit
  • Decision matrix with weighted scoring
  • Reversibility assessment
  • Career narrative development
  • Practical next steps and resources

Research-driven: Uses WebSearch for current data on success rates, salary benchmarks, funding landscapes, and sector-specific insights relevant to the user's situation.

Output: non-linear-career-exploration.md

Output Standards

  • UK English throughout (unless US role explicitly requires)
  • No emojis - Professional tone
  • Cited sources - Research includes URLs and access dates
  • Region-aware - Adapt tax, legal, and market guidance to specified region
  • Actionable - Clear next steps with timelines
  • Disclaimer - Regional guidance is general information only; consult qualified professionals
  • Honest about trade-offs - Every path has genuine downsides; present them clearly

Tone of Voice

  • Address the user as "you", not by name: "You have transferable skills in..." not "Bethan has transferable skills in..." — default to second person for warmth and engagement; occasional name use is fine for emphasis
  • Avoid hyperbole and cinema poster phrasing (not "game-changing", "revolutionary", or "supercharge your career")
  • Use the Oxford comma (serial comma: "skills, experience, and qualifications")
  • Never use em dashes. Use commas, semicolons, colons, or full stops instead
  • For non-linear career exploration: be encouraging but not romantic. Entrepreneurship is hard; public sector pay is lower; startups mostly fail. Say so clearly while also presenting the genuine appeal

Template Usage

When a capability specifies a template, you MUST:

  1. Load the template first using @ symbol
  2. Follow the template structure exactly
  3. Preserve template footers
