Instructions

When working on payment tasks:

  1. Identify the billing model: Understand whether the project needs one-time payments, subscriptions, metered billing, or a combination.
  2. Use Stripe's hosted solutions first: Prefer Checkout over custom Elements unless specific UI requirements demand it. Checkout handles PCI, 3DS, and localization.
  3. Webhook-first architecture: All payment state changes should be driven by webhooks, not client-side callbacks. The client redirects, but the webhook confirms.
  4. Idempotency everywhere: Every webhook handler and payment operation must be idempotent. Use Stripe's idempotency keys for API calls.
  5. Never log or store raw card data: Use Stripe tokens and PaymentMethods. Keep the application out of PCI scope.

Key Patterns

Stripe Checkout Session (Next.js)

// app/api/checkout/route.ts
import { NextRequest, NextResponse } from 'next/server';
import Stripe from 'stripe';

const stripe = new Stripe(process.env.STRIPE_SECRET_KEY!, {
  apiVersion: '2024-12-18.acacia',
});

export async function POST(req: NextRequest) {
  const { priceId, customerId } = await req.json();

  const session = await stripe.checkout.sessions.create({
    customer: customerId,
    mode: 'subscription',
    line_items: [{ price: priceId, quantity: 1 }],
    success_url: `${process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_URL}/billing?session_id={CHECKOUT_SESSION_ID}`,
    cancel_url: `${process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_URL}/pricing`,
    subscription_data: {
      trial_period_days: 14,
      metadata: { source: 'pricing_page' },
    },
    allow_promotion_codes: true,
    billing_address_collection: 'auto',
    tax_id_collection: { enabled: true },
    automatic_tax: { enabled: true },
  });

  return NextResponse.json({ url: session.url });
}

Webhook Handler (Robust Pattern)

// app/api/webhooks/stripe/route.ts
import { NextRequest, NextResponse } from 'next/server';
import Stripe from 'stripe';
import { prisma } from '@/lib/prisma';

const stripe = new Stripe(process.env.STRIPE_SECRET_KEY!);
const webhookSecret = process.env.STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET!;

export async function POST(req: NextRequest) {
  const body = await req.text();
  const signature = req.headers.get('stripe-signature')!;

  let event: Stripe.Event;
  try {
    event = stripe.webhooks.constructEvent(body, signature, webhookSecret);
  } catch (err) {
    console.error('Webhook signature verification failed:', err);
    return NextResponse.json({ error: 'Invalid signature' }, { status: 400 });
  }

  // Idempotency: check if already processed
  const existing = await prisma.processedEvent.findUnique({
    where: { stripeEventId: event.id },
  });
  if (existing) {
    return NextResponse.json({ received: true, duplicate: true });
  }

  try {
    switch (event.type) {
      case 'checkout.session.completed':
        await handleCheckoutComplete(event.data.object as Stripe.Checkout.Session);
        break;

      case 'customer.subscription.created':
      case 'customer.subscription.updated':
        await handleSubscriptionChange(event.data.object as Stripe.Subscription);
        break;

      case 'customer.subscription.deleted':
        await handleSubscriptionCanceled(event.data.object as Stripe.Subscription);
        break;

      case 'invoice.payment_succeeded':
        await handleInvoicePaid(event.data.object as Stripe.Invoice);
        break;

      case 'invoice.payment_failed':
        await handlePaymentFailed(event.data.object as Stripe.Invoice);
        break;

      default:
        console.log(`Unhandled event type: ${event.type}`);
    }

    // Mark event as processed
    await prisma.processedEvent.create({
      data: { stripeEventId: event.id, type: event.type },
    });
  } catch (err) {
    console.error(`Error processing ${event.type}:`, err);
