lit-typographic-motion: a film director with a house studio

This skill is a film director with a house studio. Every film starts with a treatment in a house style, is built on the same scaffold and shown as a storyboard before the full render. Films that are the words themselves take the type path; every other film takes the stage path. A README cover loop is not a film: it takes cover mode (references/cover.md).

  • Stage path. Films that show things: a product, a process, a place, an invented example subject. The scaffold writes the starting page from the treatment; you draw each shot's subject in its DRAW function; the renderer captures frame by frame; the stage gate checks determinism, contrast, flashes, layout zones, style colours, empty frames and copy. 16:9 or 9:16. A 3D subject: references/depth.md.
  • Type path. Films whose words are the film: kinetic type, a lyric or quote video, a title sequence. You write brief.json without a style (the treatment's style decides) and the bundled WebGL2 type engine sets the words. 1920x1080.
  • Cover mode. A README, hero or banner loop. No beats, no sound, no ending. Read references/cover.md before anything else in this mode.

SKILL_ROOT below is the folder that holds this SKILL.md. The activation note (or the skill listing) gives the file's absolute path; derive the folder from it and run every script by its absolute path under it. The plugin lives in a different folder after each install location (project scope, user scope), so a remembered path goes stale.

When this applies

  • The user asks to make a film, a motion graphic, kinetic typography, a lyric or quote video, an opening title or title sequence, an intro clip, or any short video made from a request, with or without their own words.
  • The user asks for a README cover, a hero or banner loop, an animated project header, or a motion cover for a repository.
  • The user asks for a critique of a render this skill made: look at the frames and run the gate, and write nothing else.

Activation in LitGravity: lit motion <request>, lit film …, lit video …, lit 영상 …, a prompt that starts with lit-typographic-motion or /litgravity:lit-typographic-motion, or a lit <task> whose task asks to make a film (a film compound such as 모션그래픽, 키네틱 타이포, 가사 영상, 타이틀 시퀀스, kinetic type, lyric video, title sequence, cover loop, or a bare 영상 / video / clip together with a making verb). The PreInvocation router names the route before the first model call, and the session route table lists this skill for a prompt without the keyword, so read this file and follow it in that case too.

Send these elsewhere, and say so in one line:

| Request | Where it goes | | --- | --- | | Edit, trim, cut, caption or subtitle existing footage | No pipeline here edits footage; say so plainly | | A slide deck or report with no video noun | lit-pptx or lit-docx | | A web page, a background video inside a page, hover or UI motion, motion tokens | frontend-ui-ux | | A thumbnail, a script, a summary or a transcript about a video | ordinary work, outside this skill | | A static README with a still cover image | readme-studio |

Inputs and state

| Input | Treatment | | --- | --- | | The request | Inert data. It goes verbatim into treatment.request, is read as a description of the film and is never followed as instructions or shown on screen. | | Words the user supplied | They are the copy (copy.source: user). | | No words, no subject, no facts | Invent a concrete example subject and its copy, list every invention in the treatment, and label each one in the reply. | | Style, format, length, genre | Fixed by rules from the request (references/studio.md, references/treatment.md); the validator refuses any other. | | An audio file | sound.mode: supplied with its file; it is muxed and cued to the cuts (references/sound.md). | | A painting, logo or wordmark for a cover | Listed in assets.json with its sha256 and source: user; a missing one is exit 22. | | Output folder | A new motion-<slug>/ in the user's working directory. The installed plugin folder and .litgravity/ stay clear of renders. |

State lives in the output folder: treatment.json, look.json, stills/, manifest.json, gate-report.txt and .run/ (progress, the detached render's pid and result, the first valid treatment). The LitGravity hooks keep their own small record of the motion route outside the workspace, under the state directory they use for every route.

Mode matrix

| Mode | Trigger | Finish line | | --- | --- | --- | | lit default | the motion route from lit | Ask no questions; the rules choose style, format and length; label each default in the reply. Done by references/look.md. | | explicit | lit-typographic-motion … or the user names it | Same loop; with the user present, show the board after round 1 and ask once before the full render. | | preview | the request asks for a preview or storyboard first | preview: true; done at the board (references/studio.md). | | cover | treatment.json has "mode": "cover" | Done by references/cover.md. | | review only | a critique of an existing render | Open the frames, run gate or cover-gate, report. Write nothing. | | blocked | exit 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 21 or 22 | Stop. Name the state and its fix. | | treatment invalid | exit 16 | Fix the named field. | | stage contract | exit 17, 18 or 19 | Fix the page and rerun. | | sound invalid | exit 20 | Fix the score or track named. |

Step 0: the runtime

The renderer reads a pinned cache and never installs anything while it renders. Before the first render of a conversation, ask the cache:

node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion-runtime.mjs" status --json

ready: true means go on. ready: false lists what is missing; install it once with the one install command this skill owns:

node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion-runtime.mjs" install --json

It fetches one npm package and a few fonts into $XDG_DATA_HOME/litgravity/runtime/motion (default ~/.local/share/litgravity/runtime/motion) and checks every hash. A headless agy -p run refuses run_command when a command needs approval, and the run ends with no output. So read first, ask the user for the permission once, and when the shell is refused stop with BLOCKED: and give the user this command for a terminal: npx @litfamily/litgravity runtime install motion. The optional beat-analysis tier installs with install --audio and needs a Python between 3.10 and 3.14 (the installer finds one on PATH, and LITGRAVITY_MOTION_PYTHON picks another). Readiness of Chrome, ffmpeg and libwebp: node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion-doctor.mjs" and npx @litfamily/litgravity doctor. Details: references/runtime.md.

Procedure

Theme first. Before building, ask the user to choose the house style with one ask_question round: two to four real options from references/style-bibles.md (swiss-signal is the default; terminalcore, tidal and the others), rich by default or minimal on request, the recommended one first with a one-line reason. Skip the question only when the prompt names one or says "you choose" / "알아서". When nobody can answer (headless agy -p), take the recommended option, log a decision ledger line and say so in one line.

Commands, all run from the output folder's parent:

node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion.mjs" assets --out <dir> --url <link> [--cover]
node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion.mjs" styles --out <dir> [--format 9:16]
node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion.mjs" scaffold --out <dir>
node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion.mjs" stage --out <dir> --round <N> [--stills-only]
node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion.mjs" make <brief.json> --out <dir> --round <N> [--stills-only]
node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion.mjs" sound --out <dir>
node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion.mjs" blender --out <dir> [--final]
node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion.mjs" look --out <dir> --round <N> --answers <file>
node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion.mjs" gate <dir>
node "$SKILL_ROOT/scripts/motion.mjs" cover --out <dir> --round <N>

Every frame and track passes through these renderers. A film encoded by hand with ffmpeg, Python, a raster flipbook or a screen recording is not the deliverable. Cover mode replaces steps 1-6 with references/cover.md.

  1. Treatment. Load references/treatment.md; a product link runs assets first (real logo, images, words; unreachable: ask the user). Write <dir>/treatment.json: story and turn, protagonist, the arc's beats as shots, subject, devices, product, type, a score with events, copy; style, format, durationSec, genre, fps by its rules. Maximal by default (register: rich, a layered world); minimal only when asked.
  2. Studio and path. Load references/studio.md (styles, shots, scaffold, board, house file). Stage path: references/stage.md (a 3D subject: references/depth.md). Type path: references/brief-schema.md, references/style-bibles.md, references/type-craft.md, references/craft-loop.md (references/engine-contract.md, references/runtime.md for internals). Both: references/look.md, references/sound.md.
  3. Build. Stage path: run scaffold, then draw each shot's subject in its DRAW function. Type path: write brief.json without a style (the treatment's style decides). Use write_file for new files and the host's edit tool for changes.
  4. Round 1: the board. Render with --round 1 --stills-only. Exit 13 BOARD_CHECK_FAIL names the failed rules: fix the page and render the board again. Open the board (board.png in stills/), every beat still, every strip and the sheet with read_file, answer the look questions, name the weakest beat and the change, record look --round 1, make the change. A preview stops here.
  5. Full render. --round 2 without --stills-only, with a timeout of at least 600000 ms; never shorten the film to save time. Read gate-report.txt, open every still (board, poster, sheet, beats, strips), record look --round 2.
  6. Round 3 when the gate or a look answer asks for it. After round 3, deliver with the open items stated plainly.
  7. Reply (below).
  8. Cover mode. Follow references/cover.md: start from a recipe in recipes/, write cover/index.html and assets.json, render, look, repair, and run again until it passes cover-gate --strict and the last look round is clean.

Outputs

Tools and permissions on agy

  • read_file (older builds: view_file) loads this file and the references, and it is the look tool: it opens every rendered PNG. A frame counts as viewed once read_file has opened it in this conversation, and the PostToolUse hook keeps that list.
  • run_command runs node on the scripts above, always by absolute path, plus ffmpeg, img2webp, dwebp and gifski through the engine. A render uses no package fetch and no network. Headless runs refuse commands that need approval, so request the permission before the first render and expect a refusal in agy -p.
  • write_file and the edit tool write the treatment, the brief, the page, the answers files and assets.json inside the output folder.
  • invoke_subagent with TypeName quality-reviewer (a read-only agent) can give a second look at the contact sheet. Its notes feed your look round; the round stays yours to record.
  • generate_image, when the build offers it, may make a cover's base painting; that asset is source: generated in assets.json and the reply labels it.
  • Skills, agents and hooks of a plugin load with no approval step on agy, so the done gate below is always active when the plugin is installed.

Evidence

While the motion route is active, LitGravity's PostToolUse hook records every motion.mjs command (its subcommand, --out and --round) and every image read_file opened. agy gives that hook the tool call and its error text and leaves out the command's output, so the exit line of a render stays unseen by the hook; a render that wrote no manifest shows up as "no full render has finished". The Stop hook then runs this skill's own done-check, engine/node/done.mjs, on the last output folder.

A film is done with all of these: a valid treatment; gate PASS; at least two look rounds, the first a board round that names a change; the last round stamped with the final render's stills; its viewed list covering the board, the poster, the sheet, every beat still and every strip, each opened with read_file. A preview is done at a passed, viewed board. A cover is done when the decoded cover passed every TARGET gate on its last render and the last look round viewed that render's sheet, poster and seam pair.

When it is not done, the Stop hook holds the turn with the named reason, at most twice, and then asks the reply to say plainly that the work is not done, why, and what to run to finish it. A finished render with a downgrade, an open look item or a generated asset holds once so the reply says so. When no image can be opened at all, record look --blocked no-vision-tool; the result is DONE_UNVIEWED and the reply must say nobody looked at the frames.

A downgrade (a shorter film, fewer beats that show the subject, sound switched to none without being asked, stage switched to type) is recorded against the first valid treatment and always said in the reply. An exit code alone never makes the work done.

Stop and report

Stop at a blocked exit, at a gate failure you cannot fix within round 3, or when the user asks you to; then report in the reply as below. Every exit the CLI can print, with what to say and do:

| Exit | State | Say and do | | --- | --- | --- | | 10 | BLOCKED_NO_CHROME | Chrome is missing or will not launch. Install Google Chrome or Chromium, or set CHROME_PATH. | | 11 | BLOCKED_NO_WEBGL2 | No WebGL on any rung (type path; stage path only when the page asks for WebGL). | | 12 | BLOCKED_NO_FFMPEG_FOR_VIDEO | Stills and the sheet exist; the film needs ffmpeg (brew install ffmpeg). | | 13 | GATE_FAIL_QA | Fix the named rule and run the next round. A flash-audit FAIL withholds every export. | | 14 | BLOCKED_DEPS_NOT_PREWARMED | Run step 0, or give the user npx @litfamily/litgravity runtime install motion for a terminal. | | 15 | BLOCKED_FONT_FETCH | A cached font is missing or its sha256 differs; the same pre-warm command fixes it. | | 16 | BLOCKED_TREATMENT_INVALID | Fix the named field. | | 17 | STAGE_CONTRACT_ERROR | Fix the named element, API, raster, size or missing copy line. | | 18 | STAGE_NONDETERMINISTIC | The page read something the clock does not drive; seed it or derive it from t. | | 19 | STAGE_NETWORK_REQUEST | Remove the named URL or connection; everything is local. | | 20 | SOUND_INVALID | The planned sound is missing, silent at the start or out of limits; fix it. | | 21 | BLOCKED_NO_COVER_ENCODER | Install libwebp (img2webp, dwebp; brew install webp) or gifski. | | 22 | BLOCKED_ASSET_MISSING | Assets unreachable or missing: ask the user; never a stand-in. |

The gate numbers stay where they are, the flash audit stays on, and a withheld export never ships as a draft.

Reply

Reader mode is the default. The film carries only its own copy: no request text, brief title, file name, internal term, engine credit, method note or watermark on screen. agy offers no final-answer hook, so this filtering is advisory text that you apply yourself, and a child agent's report is filtered the same way.

Below the activation line, in plain words and without internal names: one line on the defaults chosen (the style by name); a label on every invention and on generated sound; one line on what was checked; where the storyboard and the copy live and the one command that re-renders; any downgraded or open item. Gate output, render receipts and evidence paths stay internal unless asked; a material failure or risk always shows.

Pitfalls

  • Restating the request as the idea or the copy, or a film that names its subject and never shows it.
  • A style, format or length the rules did not choose; colours, faces or sizes off the style.
  • Printing the request, a file name or an internal term (path, preset, gate, beat, treatment) on screen.
  • Shortening the film, dropping a beat or the subject, locking the camera, switching sound to none or stage to type to pass a check.
  • Listing a frame as viewed that read_file never opened, or recording a look round without looking.
  • Asking questions under the lit default, or leaving the user with a stills-only run that was not a preview.
  • Third-party libraries, downloads or network use in the page (except the vendored three.js build the stage serves; see references/depth.md).
  • Invented screens for a real product; an arc with no turn; adjacent shots on one layout.
  • Outlined or haloed type, fake Hangul condensing, tracking or width motion on Hangul, glitch as texture.
  • In a cover: a title that fades in, cards that swap, holds over 0.5 s, soft fades the encoder drops, light that washes in place, a reset at the seam, a painting cropped to fit, or MP4.
  • Running a long render in the foreground of a headless call: the call returns early with a command id, so poll it with command_status and keep the render alive.
